I’m Dr. Kimberly Madison, DNP, AGPCNP-BC, WCC—a Board-Certified Adult-Gerontology Nurse Practitioner, educator, and author passionate about advancing dermatology education and promoting equity in healthcare. My upcoming book,
Dermatology DNP Project Ideas, is designed to inspire and guide DNP students and nurse leaders in creating impactful, dermatology-focused projects. Additionally, I've written the professional guides,
From Bedside to Dermatology: A Step-by-Step Guide for Nurses and the
Dermatology Nurse Practitioner Starter-Kit which can be purchased in the
Virtual Preceptor shop.
I earned my Doctor of Nursing Practice and Master of Science in Nursing from The George Washington University, where I was honored to join the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing. My academic journey also includes a graduate certificate in bioengineering from Tufts University, a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Memphis, and a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Radford University. Additionally, I’m Wound Care Certified through the National Alliance of Wound Care and Ostomy.
I am dedicated to fostering diversity and innovation in dermatology through my involvement in professional organizations. I serve as an advisor for the Hair for You program at Children’s National Hospital, addressing racism in nursing and promoting competencies in hair and scalp health. I’m proud to work with Diversity in Dermatology (DID) as Blog and Social Media Chair, Achieve Program Mentor, and DID Leader, while also contributing to DNPs of Color through roles in research and programming. My work extends to editorial and advisory boards for both the
Journal of Dermatology Nurses’ Association and the
Journal of Clinical and Aesthetic Dermatology.
As the founder of Mahogany Telederm and the Mahogany Telederm Nurse Internship, I aim to expose nurses to dermatology research, business, and innovation. I also established groups like the Dermatology NP + PA Group and DERM NPs + PAs of Atlanta to connect clinicians in medical, surgical, and cosmetic dermatology. My partnerships with NPHub and VisualDx reflect my mission to expand access to dermatology education and resources for skin of color.
In addition to my clinical and academic endeavors, I Founded and co-host
The Melanin Initiative, a podcast dedicated to health literacy, amplifying nursing expertise, and showcasing opportunities within healthcare. With over a decade of nursing experience and 15 years in the healthcare industry, I prioritize cultural competence, holistic care, and shared decision-making with patients.
Outside of my nursing practice, I enjoy hiking, biking, and exploring the outdoors. I’ve completed multiple races, including half-marathons and Tough Mudder challenges. Through all my efforts, I remain dedicated to empowering nurses and clinicians to excel in dermatology and improve healthcare outcomes for all.
