I'm excited to announce our first sister group: DERM NPs + PAs of Atlanta where the advisor is Alion Belvin. She's currently in NP school. As you can imagine, her time is limited, but when she has time, she'll come on and introduce herself and share whatever she's comfortable sharing. I'm excited about this partnership for a number of reasons. I have particular interest in evolving the culture in nursing when it comes to policy, publication, and curriculum - where real change takes place and where sustainability can be created. When we look at our physician colleagues, their culture promotes participation in research, mentorship from early to late career, and students obtaining leadership positions. Despite the busy curriculum in med school, med students still have time to be active outside of the classroom. I believe this is largely due to the culture, the need to be a competitive applicant, and the structure of the program/practice that makes it mandatory.

In contrast, time remains the biggest barrier in nursing when it comes to participating in research, leadership, and obtaining mentorship (knowing how and understanding the value). So, this partnership with Ali and my new Mahogany Telederm Nurse Internship will allow me to explore how these changes can be made, the structure and support needed to sustain this culture change, and the benefits to our practice.
