Tribute
This article is dedicated to DNA President Nancy Smail who served with passion and zeal. I didn't have the opportunity to meet Nancy while she graced the Earth, but we share a common goal: to see nurses excel personally and professionally. It is with great honor that I dedicate this article to her and pray for her continued memory that shall live on through her loved ones. I am grateful she has found the peace she so deserves.

The History and Mission of the Dermatology Nurses' Association
The Dermatology Nurses’ Association (DNA) has been a cornerstone of dermatology nursing for over four decades, promoting education, mentorship, and professional growth. It began in 1978 when a group of nurses gathered to address the growing need for education and collaboration in dermatologic care. By 1982, DNA held its first annual convention, solidifying its place as a professional organization dedicated to dermatology nursing.
Over the years, DNA has grown to over 2,000 members and established 19 local chapters, with significant milestones including the launch of its first journal, Dermatology Nursing, in 1989, and its current publication, the Journal of the Dermatology Nurses’ Association (JDNA), established in 2009. DNA also founded the Nurse Practitioner Society in 2005 to address the needs of NPs in dermatology.

Professional Leadership
Professional organizations thrive on the passion and dedication of its members, who work together through various committees and task forces to achieve its mission of advancing dermatologic care. These groups are the backbone of DNA’s efforts, driving its educational initiatives, advocacy work, membership growth, financial oversight, and annual programming. Each committee offers members a unique opportunity to contribute to the organization’s success while developing professionally and making meaningful connections.
The Education Advisory Council plays a vital role by overseeing all educational endeavors within DNA. By ensuring compliance with ANCC educational guidelines, it maintains the high standards of DNA’s learning resources. Members of this council have the chance to influence the future of dermatology education.
Advocacy is at the heart of the Health Policy Advocacy Scanning Committee. This group works to raise awareness of health policy issues that affect dermatology nurses and their patients, empowering the organization and its members to effectively champion causes that matter.
The Membership Advocacy Council focuses on building and strengthening the DNA community. Through efforts to grow and retain membership, this council ensures the voices of dermatology professionals are heard and amplified.
Behind the scenes, the Nominating Committee supports leadership within the organization by presenting a slate of officers for elections, ensuring that DNA is guided by dedicated and visionary individuals. Meanwhile, the Financial Oversight Committee safeguards DNA’s financial health by monitoring the budget and ensuring fiscal responsibility.
One of DNA’s most prominent events, the Annual Convention, is brought to life by the Program Planning Committee. This group is responsible for every aspect of the event, from planning the educational programming to evaluating its success. Their work ensures the convention remains a cornerstone of DNA’s mission to educate and connect dermatology professionals.
Joining a committee isn’t just about contributing to the organization—it’s also an opportunity to grow, learn, and collaborate with your peers who are passionate about dermatology. The DNA National Office is available to assist with any questions and can be reached at dna@dnanurse.org or via the website.

Nurse Practitioner Society®
The Nurse Practitioner Society® (NPS) is a vital part of the broader organization, representing over 500 nurse practitioners dedicated to excellence in dermatologic care. As a specialized community within the DNA, the NPS is committed to providing education, networking, and support for nurse practitioners who have chosen dermatology as their focus. Together, these professionals uphold the mission of the DNA: promoting high-quality dermatological care through shared expertise, evidence-based practices, and leadership.
The NPS believes in the importance of integrity, collaboration, and respect for the diverse needs of patients. Dermatology nurse practitioners are integral to the evolving field of dermatology in every setting, blending a history of professional nursing with advanced clinical training. We bring unique skills to patient care, emphasizing individualized approaches that respect cultural traditions, values, and lifestyles.
Licensed and equipped with specialized dermatology skills, we are guided by state practice acts and often collaborate with other healthcare professionals to provide comprehensive care. We actively incorporate shared-decision making, fostering a partnership that enhances treatment outcomes. Furthermore, NPS encourages NPs to pursue certification through organizations like the Dermatology Nursing Certification Board (DNCB), underscoring the importance of continual growth and excellence.
The NPS serves as a beacon for nurse practitioners in dermatology, offering resources that advance our careers while benefiting the patients and communities we serve. Its mission reflects a dedication to quality, innovation, and professional development, ensuring practicing and aspiring NPs are at the forefront of dermatological care.
Dermatology Nursing Certification Board
The Dermatology Nursing Certification Board (DNCB) offers two certifications for dermatology nursing professionals: Dermatology Nurse Certified (DNC) and Dermatology Certified Nurse Practitioner (DCNP). These certifications recognize specialized expertise and commitment to excellence in dermatologic care. They are independent from the Dermatology Nurses’ Association (DNA).
Certification is Not Required, but it is Encouraged
Certification demonstrates advanced knowledge and commitment to specialized nursing standards, providing validation of expertise through examination. This credential not only assures consumer trust but also elevates public and peer recognition of professional proficiency. Mostly importantly, certification can increase your confidence and help you reduce Imposter Syndrome.
Designation and Maintenance of Certification
-Credentials: Successfully completing the certification process earns one of the following designations:
-DNC: Dermatology Nurse Certified
-DCNP: Dermatology Certified Nurse Practitioner
-Validity: Certifications are valid for three years. Recertification can be achieved through continuing education or re-examination. For those who leave active practice, a retired credential option is available, allowing for reactivation upon meeting educational requirements.
